Eating

I am running a group called Exploring Eating: Counselling for Weight Loss and Self Care from October 14-December 9, 2015. The goal is to support people in changing eating habits and improving their health — full information on group page

Find your satisfaction! Lots of people find themselves eating more than they want, or eating foods they are trying to give up. This can be as simple as eating a bit too much, or it can take the form of binge eating. We often have mixed feelings about food and exercise. Some people don’t know how to stop eating, some diet a lot, some people purge, some people exercise a lot, some people swing back and forth between being hungry and eating a lot. Maybe you are dissatisfied with food, or with your health, or your shape.

Diet and exercise are routinely recommended by doctors, but such simple advice can be hugely discouraging. It is hard to know where to start — maybe you feel judged by your doctor, and maybe you find the whole thing a great bother. If this is you, it may not be obvious how to get started and how to make choices suited to you, and even whether or not to make these changes! Finding a path that balances your feelings with the expectations of others can be tricky. Such feelings can be complicated by social norms and our own high expectations of ourselves. Managing ourselves, our bodies, and our feelings through such change can be challenging.

I can help.

In counselling, I can help you find solutions that fit your life. Together we can consider what’s underneath your eating patterns. We might look at

  • managing your self esteem and critical thoughts
  • considering what food means to you
  • exploring your particular life circumstances
  • handling your relationships with other people
  • looking at family food styles
  • trying new behaviours
  • identifying triggers
  • handling stigma and shame
  • finding deeper nourishment

In a safe environment you can expect complete support from me as we explore your relationship with food and exercise. We will identify patterns and consider ways to get you real satisfaction.
